BETWEEN ART, NATURE AND CULTURE, THE ISLAND OF ISCHIA IS A RICH TROVE OF TREASURES TO DISCOVER.
Il Fungo (Mushroom Rock)
In the small, pretty bay across from the main thoroughfare in Lacco Ameno, you cannot help but notice a cliff which over time, the wind and the sea have eaten away at – leaving it in the shape of a mushroom. Detached from Mt Epomeo, this huge mass of green tuff, approximately 10 metres high, by now has become one of the best-known symbols of the island.
Taking its name from the dynasty that has most left its mark on it, the House of Aragon, who made it their fortress in times of war, and their summer residence in times of peace. However, the Castle has a history that stretches back to ancient times – to the time of the tyrant Hiero I of Syracuse in the fifth century BCE. Today, it is a place of culture, taking a starring role in island life.
An ancient hamlet, once populated by fishing families, that distinguishes itself from all the island’s other spots – not only for its elegant shops, restaurants and hotels that make it a little Capri, but especially for the peace and tranquillity that washes over you while walking through its streets and in its little piazza at any time of year. Closed to vehicle traffic, the town also has the honour of finding itself close to numerous curative thermal springs, famous since Greek times.
Dedicated to the Madonna della Scala, built at the start of the fifteenth century and subject of restoration dating from the start of the seventeenth century and the middle of the eighteenth century. The interior is dominated by the light, and embellished by notable works of art, amongst which is a rare, antique wooden crucifix of the Catalan School.
Bay of Sorgeto
A thermal complex where the hot spring mixes directly in the sea with its cool water allowing visitors a unique experience. The temperature of the water means bathing is possible even in winter or by moonlight. The bay is accessed by a fairly demanding descent of approximately 250 steps or by sea using the taxi boat service from the nearby port of Sant’Angelo.
